Matthew Schaff is the Lead Developer of Science News for Students. Prior to arriving at the Society in November 2015, Matt worked for two years as the Manager of Science Outreach and Education at the Foundation for Biomedical Research. Matt is a self-taught Drupal Developer who was inspired to learn Drupal to build Sci-Inspire, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit social network for science outreach piloting in New York and Washington, D.C. that connects K-12 educators with university science college students to boost science attitudes and aptitudes in American youth.
After being awarded in 2012 the Barry Goldwater Scholarship for his research into the neurobiology of nicotine, Matt graduated in 2013 from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in Neuroscience and Economics. At Pitt, Matt led the Copy Desk and Opinions Desk at The Pitt News and cut his teeth in science journalism, covering everything from neutrinos as a means of understanding the universe to the value of mouse models to immunology research.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys hiking with his dog, experimenting in the kitchen, teaching literacy to recent immigrants, and building web applications for his friends.
