agriculture: The growth of plants, animals or fungi for human needs, including food, fuel, chemicals and medicine.
aquifer: Rock that can hold pools of groundwater. The term can also be applied to those underground pools of water.
earthquake: A sudden and sometimes violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within Earth’s crust or of volcanic action.
groundwater: Water that is held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
mineral: Crystal-forming substances that make up rock, such as quartz, apatite or various carbonates. Most rocks contain several different minerals mish-mashed together. A mineral usually is solid and stable at room temperatures and has a specific formula, or recipe (with atoms occurring in certain proportions) and a specific crystalline structure (meaning that its atoms are organized in regular three-dimensional patterns).
natural gas: A mix of gases that developed underground over millions of years (often in association with crude oil). Most natural gas starts out as 50 to 90 percent methane, along with small amounts of heavier hydrocarbons, such as propane and butane.
sea level: The overall level of the ocean over the entire globe when all tides and other short-term changes are averaged out.
sediment: Material (such as stones and sand) deposited by water, wind or glaciers.
sinkhole: A body of water that forms when a patch of ground opens up, revealing a rocky cavern below. That rocky structure then accumulates rainwater because there no opening below that allows the water to easily exit. Some sinkholes develop naturally. Others can result from the overpumping of any groundwater that may have collected in the rocky underground cavern. Sinkholes can be as small as a meter across or as large as a big lake.
sponge: Something that sops up liquids or other materials and holds them until squeezed out or removed in some other way.
subsidence: A downward motion. In geology, subsidence is the downward motion of Earth’s surface. Many coastal areas are subsiding , especially where groundwater has been pumped out from beneath the surface.
